New councillor elected to Waikato Regional Council

Barry Quayle has been elected to Waikato Regional Council according to preliminary results in the Hamilton by-election.

While the vast majority of votes have been counted, special votes and voting papers delivered this morning to the council’s Hamilton East office are yet to be included in these results.

Once these remaining votes are counted, official results are expected to be available at waikatoregion.govt.nz/elections by this Saturday, 15 April.

The by-election for one position on the council follows the death of long-standing and respected councillor, Lois Livingston, last year.

Ten candidates contested the vacant seat, with more than 15,500 people (17.62 per cent) voting in the by-election, which closed at 12 noon today (Tuesday 11 April).

“Barry will be straight into it from next week with a bus tour planned to familiarise all councillors with some of the work we do in the region, as well as providing an opportunity to meet some of the individuals and organisations we support,” said council chief executive, Vaughan Payne.

The official swearing in ceremony is scheduled for the council meeting on Thursday 27 April.

Council chair Alan Livingston welcomed Mr Quayle to the council. “I’d like to congratulate Barry on his election and taking over the role so well represented by Lois over a long period of time.

“The new council has been at work for six months already, but with the help of staff we are committed to providing Barry with all the support he needs to get up to speed with work for this triennium,” Cr Livingston said.
