Open day for Lake Waikare and Whangamarino wetland

North Waikato’s Lake Waikare and the nearby Whangamarino wetland are precious natural assets, which also contribute to local flood control and drainage. But the lake and wetland are facing some significant environmental challenges.

Now the community’s being invited to an open day on Monday 13 November to hear about what’s happening to respond to those challenges, and to chat about and contribute to a new catchment management plan for the area.

The event will be from 3pm-6.30pm at the Waikare Golf Club at 66 Waerenga Rd, Te Kauwhata.

“This gives people a chance to express their vision for the catchment. They’ll also be able to give ideas for the catchment management plan that is currently being developed for the area,” said Waikato Regional Council’s integrated catchment management committee chair (north) Stu Husband.

“As a community, we want to respond effectively to the challenges the lake and wetland are facing and we need people to share their thoughts about the best way forward.”

The council is co-ordinating the plan’s development and there is also involvement from the likes of local iwi, the Department of Conservation, Fish & Game and a local landowner group.

“We know people are concerned about the lake and wetland. Working together is the best way to identify solutions to the challenges we face,” said Cr Husband.

"I encourage people to come to this event next week as part of helping with that mission.

“There will be snacks and child-friendly activities, so feel free to bring the whole whānau.”
